What Size Harness Does My Dog Need? How to Measure, Size Calculator and Fit Check

“Size” is the most common complaint on best-selling harnesses. Two measurements, a calculator that checks four makers’ charts, and a 2-finger fit test fix that.

Short answer: measure your dog standing, with a soft tape: chest girth around the widest part of the ribs, just behind the front legs, and neck girth where a collar sits. Then check that brand’s chart, because a “Small” covers a 14.5–16-inch chest in one harness and 22–27 inches in another. Chest decides the size; neck confirms it. Fit to the two-finger rule under every strap.

A note from Helen: Teya is a small Pomeranian with a lot of fluff, and fluff is exactly what makes harness sizes confusing: the dog looks bigger than she measures. This guide isn’t a test of harnesses on Teya. The size charts come from each harness’s Amazon listing, checked October 28, 2026, and the complaints come from Amazon’s summaries of owner reviews.

How to measure

  1. Chest girth: with your dog standing, wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. On fluffy dogs, press the tape down to the body, not the top of the fur.
  2. Neck girth: around the base of the neck, where a collar sits, not the thin top of the neck.
  3. Room: slip two fingers under the tape when you read it.
  4. No soft tape? Use a string or a phone charging cable, mark it, and measure the string against a ruler.

Weight on a chart is only a hint. A 12-pound Pomeranian and a 12-pound Chihuahua can need different sizes.

Size calculator

Which size in each harness?

Enter your dog’s measurements in inches. Chest is required; neck makes it more accurate. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

The calculator uses each maker’s chart. When your chest is within half an inch of the top of a size, it suggests checking the next size up.

The charts side by side

XL20.5–2321.5–31.5––

A dog with a 16-inch chest is a Medium in the Voyager, a Small in the Puppia or rabbitgoo, and an XXS in the Ruffwear. That’s why “size” tops the complaint list: on the Voyager, 1,492 of 1,958 owner mentions of size are negative, and on the Puppia 1,312 of 1,543.

The Puppia listing’s text bullet gives a slightly different Medium (15–20.5 inches) than its chart (15.5–21.5). When the two disagree, aim for the middle of both.

Fit check: the two-finger rule

Stop a dog backing out

“Secure fit” is the second big complaint: 1,207 of 3,001 mentions are negative for the rabbitgoo and 327 of 752 for the Puppia. Most escapes happen when a dog plants its feet and backs up. Tighten the neck and chest straps to the two-finger rule, walk with a front clip if your dog pulls, and for real escape artists choose a design with a third strap behind the rib cage. Clip an ID tag to the collar too, not just the harness.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my dog for a harness?

Measure chest girth around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs, and neck girth around the base of the neck where a collar sits. Use a soft tape with two fingers' room under it.

Should a dog harness be tight or loose?

Snug, not tight: you should be able to slide two fingers flat under every strap. Looser than that and many dogs can back out.

Is it better to size up or down for a dog harness?

If your dog is between sizes, choose the size whose range puts your dog's chest in the middle, which is usually the larger one for growing puppies and fluffy coats, and adjust the straps down.

Why does my dog keep slipping out of the harness?

Usually the neck or chest strap is too loose, or the harness style doesn't suit the dog's shape. Tighten to the two-finger rule, and for escape artists choose a harness with a strap behind the rib cage.

What size harness for a Pomeranian?

Many adult Pomeranians fall in the XS to S range, but the fluffy coat makes guessing unreliable. Measure the chest under the fur and check that brand's chart.
