Short answer: the most common fountain problem is a pump that stops or slows within weeks or months, usually from hair and scale in the pump or running too low on water. Clean the pump every week or two, keep the water above the minimum line and replace filters on schedule. Pink slime is bacteria: scrub and disinfect, then clean weekly. And a fountain is optional: research found healthy cats drank about the same from still bowls.
A note from Helen: Tim, our big black cat, drinks from a water fountain at home, so I know the routine of topping it up and cleaning it. This guide, though, isn’t a test of our fountain: it comes from 80 recent critical owner reviews of eight best-selling fountains, the makers’ instructions and published veterinary research.
What owners complain about
I read 80 recent one-to-three-star reviews of eight best-selling fountains on Amazon, plastic and stainless, plug-in and wireless, and sorted them by problem. Some reviews mention more than one.
| Complaint | How often | Usual cause |
|---|---|---|
| Pump stopped or the flow got weak | 32 of 80 (4 in 10) | Hair and scale in the impeller; running low or dry; a cheap pump |
| Slime, pink film or mold | 8 (1 in 10) | Bacteria growing on residue between cleanings |
| Leaks, overflow, puddles | 8 (1 in 10) | Parts not lined up after cleaning, a cracked window, splashing |
| Loud hum or trickle | 6 | Pump vibration, low water, water falling from a height |
| Filters: cost, clogging, hard to find | 6 | Filters lasting less than promised; one brand’s refills hard to buy |
| The cat won’t use it | 4 | Noise, the new object, or a cat who simply prefers a bowl |
| Wireless models: battery and refill timing | About 7 | Batteries that stop charging; bowls that refill only every few hours |
The lesson: the pump is the weak point of almost every fountain, and most pump deaths follow weeks of hair and scale. Cleaning the pump is the single most useful thing you can do.

Cleaning schedule that prevents most problems
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Daily | Top up above the minimum line; check that water is flowing. |
| Weekly | Unplug, empty and wash every part that touches water in hot soapy water (or the dishwasher, if the maker allows it). Rinse well. |
| Every 1–2 weeks | Open the pump, pull out the impeller, rinse and brush off hair and scale. Veken’s instructions say to clean the pump and replace filters every 1–2 weeks. |
| Every 2–4 weeks | Replace the filter as your maker says (Catit, for example, rates its filters for about 30 days). Sooner if flow slows or slime returns. |
| When scale or pink film appears | Soak scale in white vinegar. For pink film, scrub, disinfect with a bleach solution as water utilities advise, and rinse very thoroughly before refilling. |
Do cats actually need a fountain?
Fountains are sold as a way to make cats drink more. The research is more modest. In a study published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, researchers measured the daily water intake of 14 healthy laboratory cats from a still bowl and two kinds of flowing bowls. Average intake did not differ, though three cats showed a preference for one type. The authors concluded that bowl type had no appreciable effect on intake and suggested other strategies, such as diet, may work better. (The study was funded by a company that makes fountains.)
So a fountain is worth it if your cat enjoys drinking from it. If your vet wants your cat to drink more, for example with kidney disease, ask about wet food and keep a clean still bowl too.

Best overall: Veken C1 Stainless Steel Cat Water Fountain (108 oz)
One of the best-selling cat fountains on Amazon, with 304 stainless steel water parts, a suspended pump and a large water window.
- Stainless top is easy to scrub and does not scratch.
- Large capacity for multi-cat homes.
- Snap-together parts come apart for cleaning.
- Pumps that stopped after one to seven months, including one owner who let it run dry.
- Slime within a week for some owners who did not clean weekly.
- Spills when refilling, and louder than advertised to a few.
Warranty and returns: 2-year warranty listed; register your purchase and keep the order details.
Skip it if you won’t clean it weekly; a still bowl washed daily is better than a dirty fountain.
Check it on AmazonFor tracking intake: PETLIBRO Dockstream 2
A fountain with a stainless steel tray, a detachable 3-liter tank and an app that tracks water intake and offers timed flow.
- Detachable tank means fewer refills.
- Intake tracking can help you notice a change, which is worth mentioning to your vet.
- Timed flow mode is quieter.
- Some app features need a paid subscription.
- Filters needing changes weekly, and filters that did not seat in the dock after cleaning.
- Leaks after months for a few owners; setup and calibration instructions were unclear to others.
Warranty and returns: 2-year warranty listed, with customer support.
Skip it if you just want flowing water; the app adds cost and complexity.
Check it on AmazonWorks even if the pump stops: Catit LED Flower Fountain
A classic 3-liter plastic fountain with three flow settings. Its petal top lets cats drink even when the fountain is off, a real advantage given how often pumps fail.
- Cats can still drink from the top if the pump stops.
- Three flow modes, including a gentle bubble.
- Filters rated for about 30 days are widely sold.
- Hard to clean under the flower, and owners found mold when they skipped cleaning.
- Trickle noise; a few pumps noisy or weak from day one.
- Some long-time Catit owners felt recent units were less reliable.
Warranty and returns: 1-year warranty listed; test the pump within the return window.
Skip it if your cat has chin acne or you prefer stainless; plastic scratches and is harder to keep clean.
Check it on AmazonThe bottom line
A fountain is a pump in water, and pumps need cleaning. Pick one whose pump is easy to reach, clean it every week or two, keep it topped up, and keep a still bowl as a backup. If your cat ignores the fountain, that is fine: the research says a clean bowl does the job too.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my cat water fountain stop working?
Usually the pump is clogged with hair and mineral scale, or it ran with too little water. Unplug it, take the pump apart, rinse and brush the impeller, soak scale in white vinegar, rinse well and refill above the minimum line. If it still does not run, use the warranty: several best sellers list two years.
What is the pink slime in my cat's fountain?
Usually Serratia marcescens, a common pink-pigmented bacterium that grows in damp places with residue. Water utilities recommend scrubbing and disinfecting with a strong chlorine bleach solution for 10 to 20 minutes; for a pet fountain, rinse everything very thoroughly afterward and clean weekly so it does not come back.
How often should I clean a cat water fountain?
Top it up daily, wash the water parts weekly and replace the filter as the maker says, usually every 2 to 4 weeks. One maker, Veken, says to clean the pump and replace filters every 1 to 2 weeks.
Do cats drink more from a fountain?
Not necessarily. In a study of 14 healthy laboratory cats, average daily water intake did not differ between still and flowing bowls, though some individual cats had preferences. A fountain helps if your cat likes it; for a cat that needs more water, ask your veterinarian about wet food.
Is a stainless steel fountain better?
Stainless steel is easier to scrub and does not scratch like plastic, but slime still forms on any fountain that is not cleaned. Owners of stainless models in our sample still reported slime within a week.
